Mothers First, formally known as the Varanasi Children's Hospital was established in 2004 in response to life treating childhood malnutrition in Northern India.
In 2015, with our change of approach we changed our name to Mothers First. Instead of targeting children when they were malnourished, we started delivering food interventions to malnourished mothers when they were pregnant.
In doing so preventing babies being born malnourished in the first place. In February 2026, we were honnouered to replicate the delivery model in the Congo, Central Africa.
Mothers First has also set up a project In Somaliland where we are working with over 500 families in a newly established settlement outside the city of Hargesia. This is a community lead project where we have built a birthing centre, set up micro loans and developed essential infrastructure such as toilets, housing and agriculture.
Our vision is to set up an implementation framework that can be brought to scale.
This short video made in April 2026, charts our evolution in the past 22 years and in entitled 7 minutes of Possibility.
