Board Members with experience in Charity Governance/ Law expertise

The Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation (BSHF) are looking for a new voluntary director to join our charity.  The successful candidate would be required to carry out the normal duties associated with being a board member in line with the Charity Governance Code and the BSHF board handbook and will provide input to the overall decision-making process of the working board.    

Skills required

  • a board member with expertise in Charity Governance and/or Legal expertise. If you have experience in these areas and want to play a role in assisting the BSHF achieve our charitable objectives, we are keen to hear from you.
  • ideally have an understanding and an appreciation of the voluntary sector
  • have a desire to implement the highest standards of governance.
  • ensuring compliance with the Charity Regulator's Governance Code.
  • ensuring BSHF is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
  • developing and monitoring effective risk management strategies for BSHF.
  • developing and monitoring internal systems that are transparent and accountable to stakeholders.
  • providing general expertise on all matters relating to corporate governance and Law.
  • prior experience preferable of operating at board/senior management level.
  • commitment to the constitution of BSHF.
  • have an interest and enthusiasm that will help develop and grow the charity into the next decade of its existence. 

Commitment

Board meetings are held 5 times a year with the addition of the AGM and possible EGM's, meetings are a combination of online and in person and take around 3 hours during the day.   All directors must have the time to commit to fulfil the role.     

The Birr Scientific and Heritage Foundation T/A Birr Castle Demesne; the demesne is a fascinating place for those who are interested in Science, Astronomy, Botany, Photography, Education and Engineering. 

Support and Training

All new board members are offered a formal induction and provided with access to all relevant policies, procedures, financial data and the board handbook.  The Chair of the board and other board members will be available for support and advice.
