Board member/trustee/company director

Dublin City Volunteer Centre (DCVC) is seeking dynamic and dedicated individuals to join our board. This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of the governance of an organisation that plays a pivotal role in connecting volunteers with meaningful opportunities and supporting a vibrant Irish society.

About Us: With over 1,100 registered community and voluntary organisations and 20,000 volunteers, our mission is to foster a connected community through active participation in voluntary activities. We provide placement services, support, and training to ensure a positive experience for both volunteers and organisations.

The Role: Members of the board of directors are responsible for the governance of the organisation. This means developing the organisation’s overall strategy, setting policies, reviewing compliance with such policies and statutory obligations, and ensuring that the organisation’s finances are appropriate to further the charitable aim.

Board members may also work as part of a specialist subgroup – either HR, finance or governance – where they can use particular specialist skills to support the organisation’s work in greater depth.

Tasks include:

  • Act as a charity trustee and a company director

  • Prepare adequately for and actively participate in board meetings

  • Participate in any sub-committees as required

  • Contribute to consensus building among the board, leading to effective decisions

  • Participate in self-evaluation and reflections on the performance of the board

  • Take part in the board’s oversight of the centre’s management and operations

  • Act as an ambassador for the centre, actively promoting the work of the organisation

Requirements: We are looking for individuals with the following qualities:

  • Able to set objectives and monitor achievement

  • An awareness of, and commitment to, the values and objectives of Dublin City Volunteer Centre

  • Ability to resolve issues in a positive manner

  • Respectful of others, even those with different views and opinion

Commitment and Location: Board members serve a three-year term with an anticipated commitment of 8 hours per month. Meetings take place at Dublin City Volunteer Centre and online. Bord members should be prepared for some preparatory work in advance of each meeting.

Training and Support: New directors receive induction, training, and support, ensuring a smooth transition into the role. DCVC covers reasonable transport costs for volunteers.

Expectations and Benefits: Expectations include acting in the best interests of DCVC, preparing for meetings, and respecting confidentiality. In return, trustees gain new skills, make a positive impact, build valuable networks, and experience leadership in a supportive environment.
