Board Director with Corporate Governance/Legal Experience

Amber, is a long-established Organisation working to empower women and children of all cultures and backgrounds to live abuse-free lives. As a specialist domestic abuse service our professional team works alongside others to safeguard women and children against domestic abuse, including coercive control. We provide safe, supportive, client-centred services, from early intervention to recovery, both in the community and at the refuge.

We are seeking to recruit a new Director to the Board with corporate governance and/or legal experience. The role involves playing an active role in the organisation’s governance and strategic direction, while taking a leading role on corporate governance and legal matters

We are currently seeking a Board Director with experience in some of the following:

  • Ensuring compliance with the Charity Regulator's Governance Code.
  • Ensuring Amber is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
  • Developing and monitoring effective risk management strategies for Amber.
  • Developing and monitoring internal systems that are transparent and accountable to stakeholders.
  • Providing general expertise on all matters relating to corporate governance and Law.
  • Knowledge & understanding of the Domestic Violence/not for profit sector.
  • A strong commitment to improving the lives of women and children impacted by domestic abuse.

Essential Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities:

  • Minimum five years’ professional experience in a legal expertise role, e.g., a Qualified Solicitor or Barrister.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to understand complex corporate governance issues and risk quickly.
  • To have previous experience in change management processes in guiding organisational change including planning, implementing and solidifying changes in an organisation.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • Applicants for this role will preferably have experience of membership of a Board of Directors.
  • Board Director will provide input to the strategic direction of the Organisation and contributing with insight, oversight, and experience of strategy formulation in the sector.

About the role:

  • Term:  We currently anticipate Board Directors being appointed for a period of three years.
  • Location: Amber Kilkenny Womens Refuge CLG, Lacken, Dublin Road, Kilkenny, R95 NY04.
  • Board meetings: are currently held via hybrid option every six weeks.
