Not-For-Profit Information

Crohn’s & Colitis Ireland is the patient-to-patient support group for people who are living with Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis in Ireland.

These conditions fall under the umbrella of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (or IBD - not to be confused with IBS which stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Around 40,000 people are living with IBD in Ireland. Both diseases cause ulceration of the digestive tract which affects the ability of the digestive system to function properly. Most common symptoms include persistent diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and cramping, bleeding, severe weight loss, chronic fatigue, and malabsorption of essential nutrients.

People who are living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease often suffer disadvantage in the areas of career, education and intimate relationships. However it is very possible to live a happy and fulfilling life with a diagnosis of IBD with the right support and information.

CCI offers telephone support, a website, information leaflets, and lobbies on behalf of IBD patients. We organise public meetings and events around Ireland throughout the year for patients, their families and friends. At these events, patients have the opportunity to interact with gastroenterologists, surgeons, IBD nurse specialists, dieticians, other healthcare professionals in an informal setting. They can also meet others with IBD and share their experiences. CCI Youth Group provides support to younger patients and organises lots of fun-themed events throughout the year to bring younger people together.

CCI encourages patients to get to know others with the condition, as research shows that there can be positive psychological benefits from talking to others who understand and from being a member of a support group.

Most of our members are people who are living with Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis, but we also welcome their family members, friends, healthcare professionals, or anyone with an interest in helping those who are living with IBD in Ireland.
