Care After Prison

Care After Prison (CAP) is a small, growing charity that supports people affected by imprisonment: current and former prisoners, their families and their victims. As the name suggests, the majority of people we work with are former prisoners.

Approximately 65% of all those leaving Irish prisons end up back inside within 3 years. The idea behind CAP is a brilliantly simple one - a peer-led approach treating the former prisoner with respect and the support needed to change their lives, and thereby avoid reoffending. Since it was set up in 2011, Care After Prison has achieved exceptional results. The reoffending rate of our service users is incredibly low - around 10%. CAP's work changes the lives of ex-prisoners, which reduces crime, and thereby saves the Irish exchequer many thousands of euros. Read more about CAP's results at careafterprison.ie.
