Trustee with HR Experience

As a Trustee with a Human Resources background, you will take the lead at board level, whilst ensuring that the collective responsibility of the Board of Trustees for the management, support and development of DWCR’s staff is maintained.

We are currently looking to involve new Board Trustees and are particularly interested in volunteers with HR experience. 

The trustee is required to be part of Drogheda Women & Children's Refuge Board of Directors and the Finance & HR Sub-Committee.  The Board Trustee will work with the CEO and Board to achieve the mission and objectives of DWCR.

Objectives of the Role:

As a Trustee with a Human Resources background, you will take the lead at board level, whilst ensuring that the collective responsibility of the Board of Trustees for the management, support and development of DWCR’s staff is maintained.

Principal HR responsibilities:

Advise Trustees on the long-term vision and strategic direction for investment in human resources:

  • To grow, maintain and develop staff throughout the organisation.
  • To contribute to HR policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives.
  • To ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to DWCR’s charitable objectives and complement the company culture.
  • To advise on and help improve management of HR where appropriate.
  • To ensure the Board of Trustees properly remunerates staff, reviewing and rewarding performance and development opportunities.

In relation to the CEO and HR management Function:

  • To work with DWCR’s CEO to review current HR management arrangements, and provide guidance on HR strategy and short and long-term direction.

Candidates should have:

  • A background as a senior HR professional, with proven track record of success at an operational and strategic level.
  • An understanding of the Charities Regulator and relevant legislations and statutory requirements
  • A thorough understanding of HR policy and practice
  • Experience of performance management, HR/employment law issues and implementing them contextually

  • Ability to see different perspectives, considering all information in decision-making.
  • Commitment to the highest levels of finance and corporate governance.
  • Commitment to the charity and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
  • Understanding of the charity’s work, impact, and users.
  • Good, independent judgment, and strategic vision.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees, and Chief Executive.

Additionally, candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strategic vision and sound, independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively and a willingness to speak their mind.
  • Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Understanding and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion with the ability to bring diverse perspectives to the Board.
  • A proven track record of sound judgment and effective decision-making.
  • A history of impartiality, fairness, and the ability to respect confidences.

    Time commitments

    • There are 6 board meetings per year, and last for approximately 90min. An online facility to attend meetings is available only in certain circumstances
    • There is one in person AGM per year.  
    • There are additional sub-committee meetings, depending on the business need.
    • Estimated monthly time commitment is 5-10 hours, plus board and committee meetings.
