About the Organisation
The Centre for Environmental Living and Training (CELT) is a registered Irish environmental charity promoting sustainable living, nature conservation, traditional crafts, and non-formal adult education. Operating nationally but primarily in the Slieve Aughty region, CELT delivers practical workshops, community training, biodiversity initiatives, and flagship events like "Weekend in the Hills."
Role Overview
CELT is seeking an experienced finance professional to join our voluntary Board of Directors as Honorary Treasurer. The Treasurer provides strategic oversight of the organisation's financial affairs, ensuring robust internal controls, budget monitoring, and transparent grant reporting.
Board & Operational Support
• Board Support: Works closely with and receives support from the Board Chair and Deputy Chair
• Operational Liaison: Liaises directly with contracted operational roles, including the Board Secretary, Events Coordinator, and Funding Coordinator, to monitor project budgets, manage event accounts, and ensure compliant financial reporting on grants
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee CELT's financial management, budgeting, and cash flow forecasting in collaboration with the Board and administrative team
• Ensure accurate financial record-keeping, preparation of annual accounts, and compliance with SORP/Charities Regulator financial standards
• Provide clear financial reports and updates at monthly board meetings
• Guide the Board and contracted Funding Coordinator on grant accounting, financial compliance, and risk management for public funding streams (e.g. LEADER, NPWS, Heritage Council)
• Oversee and authorise contractor payments in conjunction with the Board Chair using CELT's Payment Authorisation process
• Review and sign off on Payment Authorisation Forms for all contractor and service provider payments
• Support the development and monitoring of CELT's annual budget
• Work with CELT's accountants on annual accounts preparation
Desirable Skills & Experience
• Professional qualification or background in accounting, finance, or financial management (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or equivalent experience)
• Understanding of non-profit accounting principles, charity financial reporting, and grant tracking
• Experience with Irish charity governance and Charities Governance Code compliance
• Familiarity with grant funded organisations and public funding compliance requirements
• Commitment to CELT's mission, environmental sustainability, and practical heritage education
Time Commitment
• Monthly board meeting (approx. 1.5–2 hours, online/hybrid)
• Approximately 2–4 hours per month for financial review, budget checks, and officer duties
• AGM June/July in person event 2 hours
