Chairperson

The Organisation

Founded in May 1949, the ISPCA stands as a beacon of hope and support for animals in need. Guided by a group of dedicated staff and volunteers from across Ireland, the organisation has committed itself to the prevention of cruelty to animals and the rescue, rehabilitation, and tender rehoming of animals who have endured cruelty and neglect.  ISPCA’s dedicated Inspectorate are authorised officers under the Animal Health & Welfare Act and investigate reported cases of animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse and work independently and in collaboration with other agencies to seize and prosecute, where appropriate, cases where animals have been mistreated.

At its core, the ISPCA serves as a nurturing hub, fostering collaboration with 14 affiliated local animal welfare organisations.

As Ireland's most significant national animal welfare charity, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) joins hands with its affiliated member societies to form a formidable force for good. Together, they work co-operatively to address the diverse needs of tens of thousands of animals spanning different species.

With a heartfelt commitment to preventing cruelty and caring for animals who are abandoned or rescued from cruelty or neglect, the Society embraces a noble mission. Their dedication resonates through their actions, as they strive to protect, rescue, nurture, and find loving homes for those innocent beings who have experienced the harshness of cruelty and neglect.

Mission

Their mission is to prevent cruelty to animals, promoting, providing, and advocating for animal welfare, and actively alleviating animal suffering in Ireland. The ISPCA aligns its objectives with those of similar animal welfare organisations globally. They firmly assert that animals should live free from unnecessary suffering and strive to rescue, rehabilitate, and responsibly rehome animals facing cruelty or neglect. Additionally, they emphasise the intrinsic value of all animals as sentient beings, advocating for their respectful and protective treatment.

In summary, their goals encompass:

  • Promoting and providing for animal welfare
  • Preventing cruelty to animals
  • Alleviating animal suffering

Board Meetings

The organisational calendar consists of a total of nine board meetings held throughout the year, strategically designed to discuss and address crucial matters regarding the ISPCA's operations and objectives. These sessions play a vital role in decision-making, policy formulation, and overall organisational development. Additionally, the ISPCA holds five FARC Sub-Committee meetings annually and has two working groups focused on legislation & policy improvement and educational initiatives.

To improve efficiency, most of these meetings are conducted remotely. However, to promote a more interactive and dynamic exchange of ideas, selected in-person sessions are organised at the Masonry facility on Thomas Street in Dublin.

A notable highlight in the organisation's annual calendar is the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM for the year ended 2022 was successfully convened in January 2024 and the AGM for the year ended 2023 will be held later this year. This significant event serves as a comprehensive review of the organisation's activities, financial status, and future direction, providing a platform for member engagement and participation.  The ISPCA also encourages collaboration and drives communication with its affiliates through regular informal affiliate meetings.
