Board Member with Marketing experience

The Organisation:

Established in 1992, Skibbereen Sports and Fitness Centre (hereafter, the Centre) is a company limited by guarantee (CLG) that offers a professional service at affordable prices to clients of all ages, from toddler to older adult. Its range of activities is extensive and includes a variety of sports, fitness, recreation, health, and well-being in its service. Overseen by a voluntary board of directors, the Centre currently caters for up to 1,500 members of the local community each week.

The Role:

Skibbereen Sports and Fitness Centre currently seeks a board member with marketing experience to support its goals including the rebranding and redevelopment of its website (currently https://skibbsportscentre.ie/).

Board roles are voluntary with a commitment to attend four board meetings per year and offer strategic oversight to the Centre’s management team as required. No previous board member experience is required.

Key responsibility:

  • Provide marketing expertise, with an understanding of digital and social media, to the board and management of the Centre.

General responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of strategies, policies and plans for the Centre.
  • Contribute to the work of any committees established by the board.
  • Contribute to decision-making and share responsibility for the board’s decisions.
  • Attend at minimum 4 board meetings per year on a regular and consistent basis and be well prepared by reading relevant papers in advance.
  • Represent the board at meetings and events as required.
  • Attend training events and keep up to date with subjects relevant to the Centre’s work.
  • Share corporate responsibility for decisions taken by the board as a whole (if there is fundamental disagreement with a board decision, board members have the option of recording their disagreement in the minutes).
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding matters discussed at board meetings.
  • Monitor and review performance without interfering in the day-to-day running of the Centre.
  • Disclose any personal interest or profit which may conflict with the interests of the Centre.
  • Be aware of the obligations of board members under the relevant companies’ legislation.
  • If a board member wishes to enquire about day-to-day matters this should be directed to the Chairperson of the Management Committee and should not initially be raised at Board Meetings.
  • Report any illegal or unethical behaviour.

Board meetings:

The board meets 6 times per year. Meetings are held in the Ludgate Hub, Skibbereen with an option to attend remotely by video link if necessary.
