Summary of role

Ballymote FRC is seeking a new Member of the Board of Directors with a focus on law and governance, to join our Board of Directors. The role involves playing an active role in the organisation’s governance and strategic direction, and taking a leading role on governance related and legal matters.

Role description

General responsibilities:

  • Providing efficient and effective strategic leadership of Ballymote FRC.
  • Upholding and working towards the vision, mission, values and objectives of Ballymote FRC and ensuring the organisation continues to work towards these.
  • Acting in the interests of Ballymote FRC at all time in relation to assets, property, statutory obligations and management requirements as outlined in the Board Handbook.
  • Ensuring Ballymote FRC complies with relevant legal requirements.
  • Promoting prudent and effective management of organisational resources (financial and human).
  • Ensuring there are strategies and policies in place that will support the objectives of Ballymote FRC.
  • Developing and monitoring effective risk management strategies for Ballymote FRC.
  • Developing and monitoring internal systems that are transparent and accountable to stakeholders.
  • Formally registering conflicts of interest or loyalty with the Board.
  • Not accepting gifts or gifts in kind in the capacity of Board member.
  • At all times, acting with integrity and upholding the interests of the organisation.

Additional duties specific to the Law and Governance role:

  • Providing general expertise on good governance, legal matters and regulatory compliance (you will not be asked to provide Ballymote FRC with formal legal advice)
  • Taking an active role in the Governance sub-committee of the board
  • Taking an active role in supporting Ballymote FRC to establish and review relevant policies and procedures

Person specification

The successful candidate will have professional experience and a successful track record of strategic leadership, law and governance.

Desirable Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities:

  • Experience as a volunteer or volunteer manager.
  • Experience working in governance and legal matters for a non-profit organisation.
  • Knowledge of the community and voluntary sector.
  • Board level experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge and experience of the Charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice).
  • Knowledge of the 2014 Companies Act.
  • Knowledge of the 2009 Charities Act.
  • Experience of achieving change management and transformation in an organisation.
  • Understanding of good governance and experience of implementing good governance practice in the private, non-profit or public sector
  • Experience in writing and/or reviewing policies and procedures
  • Governance skills including experience of strategic planning, organisational performance management and service development.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Calm under pressure.
  • Able to manage a wide variety of situations in a meeting and ensure that the outcomes are in the best interest of the organisation.

About Ballymote Family Resource Centre 


Ballymote Family Resource Centre has been in operation since 2001. We are one of 121 Family Resource Centres (FRCs) nation-wide delivering Ireland’s largest national community-based family support programme.

The primary purpose of the FRC programme is to combat disadvantage, and to strengthen and empower individuals, families, children and communities. A central feature of the FRC programme is the involvement of local people in identifying needs and addressing the issues they face. FRCs provide a range of universal and targeted services and development opportunities that address the needs of families and individuals.

Each FRC is led by a Voluntary Board of Directors which aims to identify and address the specific needs of their local community. The FRC programme is core-funded by Tusla – the Child and Family Agency.
