Board Director (Non-Executive)

1. Main purpose of the role

Board Directors are responsible for providing independent oversight, governance, and strategic direction to Camphill Communities of Ireland, ensuring the organisation fulfils its charitable purpose, delivers high-quality services, and remains financially sustainable, compliant, and well-governed.

Directors act collectively as part of the Board and do not have operational responsibilities. They are expected to bring skills, experience, challenge, and support to the Board, while upholding Camphill's values and ethos.

2. Key Responsibilities

All Directors of the Board are expected to:

  • Act in the best interests of the organisation, its residents and its charitable purpose.
  • Provide effective governance and oversight, including compliance with charity law, governance standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to the development, approval and monitoring of the organisation's strategy and strategic objectives.
  • Oversee financial sustainability, viability and stewardship of resources.
  • Monitor organisational risk, quality, safety and compliance, including oversight of risk registers and assurance frameworks.
  • Support and constructively challenge senior leadership, including the CEO.
  • Ensure robust systems are in place for accountability, transparency, and internal control.
  • Participate in Board and committee meetings, preparation and decision making.
  • Act as an ambassador for Camphill, promoting its work, reputation and values externally.

3. Skills & Expertise

Camphill is seeking to appoint two directors with complementary skills, and applications are welcomed from individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas.

Desirable Areas of Expertise

Finance & Financial Governance

  • Experience in financial oversight, accounting, audit, or financial management.
  • Desirable experience within:
    • Charities or not-for-profit organisations.
    • Section 39 organisations.
    • Public funding environments, including HSE funding and service level agreements.

Property & Estate Management

  • Experience in property, estates, housing, or facilities management.
  • Understanding of asset planning, maintenance, capital investment, or regulatory compliance related to property.
  • Experience relevant to residential or care-based settings is an advantage.

Fundraising, Development & Sustainability

  • Experience in fundraising, donor engagement, grants, philanthropy, or alternative income streams.
  • Strategic understanding of financial sustainability in a charitable or social care context.

Strategic Planning & Organisational Development

  • Experience contributing to organisational strategy, transformation, or change.
  • Ability to think long-term while balancing operational realities in a regulated environment.

Quality, Risk & Compliance

  • Experience with risk management, quality systems, governance frameworks, or regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with regulated services, inspections, or assurance processes (e.g. HIQA or equivalent) is desirable.

5. Governance & Legal Responsibilities

Directors of the Board must be willing to:

  • Comply with the organisation's Governance Code, Constitution, and charitable obligations.
  • Meet statutory duties under:
    • The Charities Act.
    • Company law (where applicable).
    • Relevant codes of governance and regulation.
  • Act as fiduciaries of the organisation and manage conflicts of interest appropriately.

Training and induction will be provided.
