Volunteer Trustee
Mayo Rape Crisis Centre provides free, safe and confidential support for anyone in County Mayo, who has experienced or been affected by any form of sexual violence at any time in their lives. The Centre’s philosophy is informed by the values of equality, empowerment and inclusiveness.
The service has grown significantly in recent months, and is currently in the process of relocating to a larger premises, which will allow us to expand our service offering in the community.
At a time of positive transformation and growth, the Centre is seeking new volunteer board members to strengthen the skills, expertise, capacity and diversity of our existing board, and to support us in developing and implementing a new five-year strategic plan for the organisation.
Role Description
As a board Member, you will provide strategic direction and leadership, governance and oversight to ensure that Mayo Rape Crisis Centre achieves its mission, remains financially sustainable, operates in line with its values and legal obligations while supporting the continued growth and development of our services.
This role carries the duties and responsibilities of a company director under the Companies Act and Charities Governance Code. Board members must uphold strict confidentiality and demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Training may be provided as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and oversight of the organisation’s strategy and long-term direction and sustainability
- Ensure strong governance and compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards
- Monitor financial and organisational performance, resource allocation and risk
- Support the Director of Services in achieving organisational goals.
- Contribute to decision-making regarding finance, human resources, policies, quality assurance, fundraising, facilities, and service development.
- Act as an ambassador for the organisation, promoting its work and values in the community
- Contribute expertise in areas such as safeguarding, finance, HR, legal, communications, or fundraising (as relevant)
What’s involved?
Typical commitment includes:
- Attendance at board meetings (typically 8-10 per year, hybrid in-person and online)
- Participation in occasional subcommittee meetings or working groups
- Reviewing board reports in advance of meetings
- Supporting specific projects or initiatives where appropriate
Essential:
- Commitment to the mission and values of supporting survivors of sexual violence
- An understanding of good governance principles
- Ability to think strategically and contribute to board-level discussions
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Integrity, sound judgement, and discretion
- Professional expertise in areas such as:
- Finance or accounting
- Legal or compliance
- HR or organisational development
- Fundraising or communications
- Healthcare, social services, or trauma-informed practice
Desirable:
- Experience in the non-profit/charity sector
- Previous board experience
