Registration Panel – seeking new members

RISLI is seeking expressions of interest from appropriate individuals, to join the Registration Panel of the Register of Irish Sign Language Interpreters (RISLI).   The registration system is guided by the 2017 Irish Sign Language (ISL) Act (referred to as an ‘accreditation scheme’) and the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People. The Registration Panel is seeking three new members.

Background

The Irish Sign Language Act (2017) outlines the requirements for courts and public bodies to use Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreters whose qualifications have been verified by the RISLI. The RISLI register is a standards-based registration system for ISL Interpreters. RISLI receives funding from the Department of Social Protection (DSP) through the Citizen’s Information Board (CIB). Policy responsibility for RISLI lies with the Department of Children, Disability and Equality. The company has a Board of Directors who are tasked with the governance of the company. The Registration Panel deals with matters in relation to registration.

 

Registration Panel Membership
RISLI is seeking expressions of interest from appropriate individuals who have the skills, capacity and experience to fill three vacancies on the Panel:

 

  • one Deaf expert in Irish Sign Language interpreting and the Deaf Community
  • one professional Irish Sign Language interpreting representative
  • one member with legal expertise

 

Duties of the Registration Panel

 

  • defining the entry requirements and standards for the registration of Irish Sign Language interpreters.
  • recognising education and training programmes for the purposes of the registration of Irish Sign Language interpreters.
  • setting criteria for assessments of Irish Sign Language interpreters for entry onto the register.
  • specifying guidance in relation to good practice.

Meetings

The Panel meets approximately 4 times a year. Almost all meetings are held online. One scheduled in-person meeting is held annually in Deaf Village Ireland, Cabra ,Dublin 7. The Panel may have an additional ad hoc meeting as required.

 

Expenses

As voluntary members no fees will be paid, however, travel and subsistence expenses will be paid when applicable.

 

Term of Office

Appointments are initially for a term of three years, which can be renewed.
