Trustee

Established in November 2006 Laois Domestic Abuse Service is a non governmental organisation, and registered charity. We are the only specialist service in Laois working to provide group programmes, support, information, counselling and advocacy services to women and children/young people subjected to domestic abuse and coercive control.
 

Time Commitment: Approximately 6 - 10 meetings per year, plus additional time as required for sub-committees/working groups or advocacy

Tenure: 1 year, re-election possible thereafter

Overview
We are seeking a committed and strategic individual to join the Board of our domestic abuse charity based in Laois. As a Board Director, you will play a key role in guiding the organisation’s mission to support and empower women and children subjected to domestic abuse and coercive control. Your experience in the community and voluntary sector will help strengthen our impact and ensure sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
•    Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development, oversight, and review of the organisation’s strategic direction and policies.
•    Strategic oversight and tactical awareness: Bring both to board discussions, ensuring that plans are realistic, actionable, and grounded in operational realities.
•    Governance: Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, including the Charities Governance Code.
•    Stakeholder Engagement: Leverage your knowledge of the community sector to support the Service Director in building effective relationships with key stakeholders including funders, service users, partner organisations, and local authorities.
•    Support & Oversight: Provide support and oversight to the Service Director, ensuring accountability and impact.
•    Financial Stewardship: Contribute to effective financial oversight, including budgeting and fundraising strategies.
 

Essential Criteria
•    Proven experience in the community and voluntary sector, fundraising or public relations/communications.
•    Astute, tactical and strategic thinker 
•    Ability to contribute to long-term planning, translating high-level goals into achievable actions.
•    Strong understanding of governance and the role of a non-profit board.
•    Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
•    Commitment to the mission and values of supporting women and children subjected to domestic abuse and coercive control.
•    High standards of integrity, confidentiality, and ethical behaviour.

Desirable
•    Knowledge of domestic abuse and coercive control issues and trauma-informed approaches.
•    Familiarity with the Irish charity landscape and relevant legislation
