Usher Syndrome Ireland is a volunteer, peer-led national charity supporting children and adults, and their families, living with Usher syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects both hearing and vision.

We exist to ensure that no one faces this journey alone and give hope of a cure.

Through connection, trusted information, advocacy, and support for research, we are building a stronger, more visible community for those living with progressive dual sensory loss in Ireland.

As a small but growing organisation, every Board member truly plays a meaningful role in shaping our future and impact.

About the Role
We are looking for a Treasurer (Trustee) who wants to contribute their financial expertise to a good cause.

This is an opportunity to help guide a patient-led organisation ensuring we remain sustainable, transparent, and ambitious in our mission to grow and deliver for our community.

The successful candidate will be joining a Board that values lived experience, collaboration, and integrity, and where your contribution will directly support people navigating life with progressive sight and hearing loss.

While this is a voluntary, unpaid position, your contribution will be real and visible.

Key Responsibilities

• Help safeguard the financial health and sustainability of the organisation
• Provide clear, accessible financial insight to support good decision-making
• Support budgeting, financial planning, and long-term sustainability
• Oversee financial reporting and annual accounts in partnership with external accountants
• Ensure appropriate financial controls and governance are in place
• Contribute to Board discussions, bringing both financial expertise and strategic thinking
• Support the organisation in growing responsibly, including funding and income planning

Who we’re looking for
You don’t need to have previous Board experience. We’re seeking someone with financial experience and an interest in contributing to a small, purpose-driven organisation.

Essential Criteria:

• Resident in Ireland and able to fulfil the legal requirements of acting as a charity trustee in Ireland
• Experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or financial management
• Ability to interpret financial information and explain it clearly to others
• Understanding of governance and legal responsibilities of a trustee (training can be provided)
• Fluent English (spoken and written)
• Willingness to contribute thoughtfully, ask questions, and support collective decision-making
• Availability of approximately 4 hours per month

Desirable:

• Experience in the charity or non-profit sector
• Familiarity with Irish charity governance or regulatory requirements
• Experience with budgeting, funding, or financial planning
• Knowledge of GDPR and good governance practices
• A personal or professional connection to Usher syndrome, dual sensory loss, or lived experience of hearing and/or sight loss (your own, a family member’s, or through your work)
  • As a peer-led organisation, we are especially keen to ensure lived experience continues to shape our Board

Board Commitment

• Approximately 4-5 Board meetings per year (online)
• Light preparation and occasional financial input between meetings

Board members are expected to act with integrity, independence, and in the best interests of the organisation, upholding high standards of governance and accountability.
