Rare Diseases Ireland (RDI) is the national alliance for voluntary patient-led groups representing people affected by or at risk of developing genetic or other rare diseases in Ireland. RDI works to advocate for the rare disease community (patients, family members and carers), empower patients to advocate on their own behalf and engage patients to provide input and become decision-makers in the development of health and social care policies and guidelines in Ireland.

The Role:

RDI is seeking to recruit a trustee with previous board-level experience and proven knowledge in financial management or accountancy to act as Treasurer for the company. The candidate will ideally be a qualified Accountant or ACA or CIMA qualified, ideally with 5 or more years senior management experience.

The Treasurer’s primary role is ensuring that the finances of the company are administered correctly and that the finance and related systems are fit for purpose and develop as the company grows.

The role will include:

  • Membership of RDI’s Staff & Finance committee.
  • Providing input to the strategic direction of RDI and contributing to strategy formulation, development and implementation.
  • Evaluation and implementation of financial policies and procedures to ensure the organisation is compliant with best practice, including whistle blower policies.
  • Oversight of financial compliance and risk management in the organisation.
  • Review RDI’s finances and advise the Board on financial implications of proposals, cash flow activities, income raising plans, budget plans, etc.
  • With CEO preparing and presenting financial reports to the Board
  • Oversee the terms and effectiveness of the annual audit and any other internal or external financial audits as may be judged necessary
  • Presenting the annual audited accounts at the Annual General Meeting

Required:

  • An appreciation and knowledge of the voluntary & not-for-profit sector.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience operating at a senior level.
  • An understanding of and commitment to our mission and values.
  • Commitment to the highest levels of corporate governance.

Desired:

RDI is ideally seeking to recruit a trustee with knowledge and experience of rare diseases. RDI is particularly, but not exclusively, interested in individuals diagnosed with a rare disease or individuals with family member(s) with a rare disease or caregivers of somebody with a rare disease.

Board Meetings:

There will be a minimum of 4 board meetings per annum in addition to Staff and Finance committee meetings. Meetings are held in Dublin and/or online.
