Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and its Faculties - Board and Committee Members

Applications are invited from members of the public (non-medical doctors) to join Boards and Committees at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and its Faculties.

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is Ireland’s oldest and largest medical training body. We provide postgraduate training for doctors to specialise in general medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, public health medicine, pathology and occupational medicine. We are also active in health advocacy. Our mission is to develop and support our learners, trainees, members and fellows to be leaders in healthcare delivery and transformation through training, education and advocacy. 

We are seeking to recruit members of the public who are not doctors to assist us in carrying out these activities. These individuals will sit on College Boards or Committees and assist us by providing a different perspective and set of experiences to complement that of our doctors and staff.  

We are seeking Board and Committee members ideally with: 

  • Experience at an appropriately senior level in the public, private, voluntary or charity sectors 

  • Experience and/or interest in health-related areas, and 

  • Previous board level experience. 

Candidates should have experience in two or more of the following areas: 

  • Patient/Healthcare Advocacy 

  • Corporate Governance 

  • Legal 

  • Risk Management 

  • Strategic Development 

  • Financial Expertise (Accountancy, Audit, Corporate Finance) 

In order to be an effective contributor on an RCPI Board or Committee it is recommended that Members should: 

  • Bring independent and objective scrutiny to the oversight of the organisation 

  • Be prepared to be challenging when necessary while being supportive to the delivery of the strategy and objectives 

  • Be equipped to offer considered advice on the basis of sound judgement and experience 

  • Be prepared to make a time commitment to their work commensurate with their role 

Board/Committee Meetings -  

There will be approximately 6 half-day meetings per annum (time commitment varies depending on the specific Board / Committee). RCPI Board and Committee meetings are held at No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 (attendance may also be facilitated via Microsoft Teams for at least some of the meetings).     

Remuneration 

Our Board and Committee Members are not remunerated but we will reimburse all reasonable travel and associated expenses in line with College policy. 

Conflicts of Interest 

Personal or professional relationships with other members of RCPI Council, Boards or Committee or with RCPI staff may be perceived as a conflict of interest and should be declared on application.

Appointments will be made following an interview process and we will contact you directly should you be shortlisted for interview.

Subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Acts, 2014, applications will be treated in strict confidence. All enquiries, applications and all aspects of the proceedings are treated as strictly confidential and are not disclosed to anyone, outside those directly involved in that aspect of the process. 

Data Protection 

RCPI will process any personal data provided by you in connection with an application for this role in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Acts 2018. 

The data will be kept for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which that data is processed, and it shall be kept in a manner that ensures appropriate security of the data including the unauthorised or unlawful processing of data.  

RCPI may disclose the data that you provided in the application to external sources for the following reasons – where there is an external assessor assisting in the shortlisting for nominations to the boards or committees and for internal and external audit.
