ALONE is a large national organisation, with proven supports, that enables older people to age at home. Our work is for all older people and aims to improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. We have a national network of staff and volunteers who provide an integrated system of Support Coordination, Practical Supports, Support & Befriending, a variety of Phone Services, Social Prescribing, Housing with Support and Assistive Technology.

ALONE has an ambitious Strategic Plan which is being updated for 2026-29. It recognises the evolving needs of older people to meet the increasing demand with Ireland’s aging population. The Role:

ALONE is recruiting a Research & Evaluation Trustee to provide strategic leadership and governance oversight for the organisation’s research and evaluation activities. This role ensures that evidence-based practices inform decision-making, programme development, and impact measurement, while maintaining compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Candidates should have strong expertise in research methodologies, data analysis, and impact evaluation.
  • An advanced academic qualification in a discipline such as evaluation, social science, public policy or data science.
  • Strong communication, strategic and analytical skills.
  • Experience of influencing and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
  • Time to commit fully to the role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend Board and appropriate Subcommittee meetings. Attendance will be recorded as per the Charities Regulator requirements. 
  • Adhere to the Annual Meeting Calendar
  • Understand the role, structure and workings of the Board and work to ensure that the Board meets its responsibilities.
  • Understand their individual and collective responsibilities and be accountable for their actions.
  • Actively contribute to the work of the Board – via committees and / or as an office holder.
  • Read reports provided to ensure they can act and participate in collective discussion and decision-making based on full information.
  • Be bound by majority decisions of the Board and accept collective responsibility and the authority of the Board.
  • Fulfil their duty to ensure good governance of ALONE and be proactive in this capacity.
  • To annually update the register of interests and code of conduct
  • Engagement with ALONE Technology and Systems that enable Trustee to fulfil their role.
  • Champion the mission, vision and values and ethos of ALONE

Board Meetings:

There are five board meetings per year held in Dublin 8 which last approximately 2 hours in the evening.  Board members are encouraged to attend in person although it is possible for occasional online attendance.

Sub-Committees: There are three sub-committees.

Audit & Finance; Service, Risk & Governance and HR, Communications & Campaigns.

Each sub-committee meets five  times per year, in person as much as possible.

The Research & Evaluation Trustee will sit on the Service, Risk & Governance sub-committee.
