The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) North West Therapy Centre, Sligo is seeking to recruit two new Directors of the Board of Management. The roles involve playing an active role in the organisation’s governance and strategic direction.

Joining the Board of the MS Centre is an exciting opportunity to help govern this long-established reputable organisation that provides essential services to people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

MS Centre Services

Services provided include physiotherapy and a rage of holistic services including reflexology and counselling. We also operate two Charity Shops, Essential Seconds in Sligo and Ballymote and a fully supported and accessible holiday facility Woodhaven.

The MS Centre is committed to continually develop and improve the quality of its services, where people with MS and other related neurological conditions can live life strengthened and supported by skilled staff who ensure no person availing of the services has to face their condition alone.

The MS Centre exists to enrich the lives of people with Multiple Sclerosis and related neurological conditions by providing essential services and supports to clients and their families

What's Involved

Willingness to attend board meetings (held in-person in Sligo or this is the option to attend some meetings virtually) – for approx. 2 hours, 6 times a year 
Willingness to undertake subgroup/committee  work as required or in relation to specific skills 
Willingness to undertake training relevant to the Directors role.

General Duties of Directors

  • Comply with  the MS Centres governing document
  • Ensure that the MS Centre is carrying out its charitable purposes for the public benefit
  • Act in the best interests of the MS Centre and with reasonable care and skill
  • Manage the assets of the MS Centre and make appropriate investment decisions
  • Ensure that the MS Centre is registered on the Charities Regulator’s Register of Charities
  • Develop and monitor effective risk management strategies for the MS Centre.
  • Ensure that the MS Centre keeps proper books of accounts
  • Ensure that the MS Centre prepares and furnishes financial accounts and annual reports to the Charities Regulator, CRO etc
  • Promote prudent and effective management of organisational resources (financial and human).
  • Develop and monitor internal systems that are transparent and accountable to stakeholders
  • Ensure Service Agreements (SAs) for provision of funding from 3 Health Service Executive areas are in place.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience in any one or more of the following: Governance, Clinical, Healthcare, Communications, Compliance, Strategy, Risk Management or Financial. 
  • An appreciation and knowledge of the community and voluntary sector
  • An understanding of and commitment to our mission and values
  • Experience serving on not-for-profit, public or private sector Boards of Directors or Board sub-committees
  • The Board welcome interest from applicants from all professional backgrounds who possess a willingness to utilise their skills for the benefit of the community and voluntary sector.
