Director with Irish Non-Profit Sector Experience
Role: Director (Board Member), Altu CLG
Location: Must be resident in Ireland, the EEA or the UK. We're particularly keen to hear from people based in Ireland.
About the role
Altu is recruiting its third director. This is a founding seat on a board of two, at the point where governance is still being built rather than inherited. You'd have real influence over how this organisation is structured, what it prioritises, and how it grows. This is a start-up with no staff and no funding yet. Right now the board's job is to get Altu incorporated, registered as a charity, and pointed in the right direction.
Who we're looking for
There's one hard requirement, and it's a legal one. Irish charity law requires that a majority of our directors be resident in Ireland, the EEA or the UK. This is about tax residency, not citizenship. Our other board member is US based, so this seat needs to be filled by someone resident in one of those places. Beyond that, we're genuinely open.
We'd love to hear from you if any of this sounds like you:
- You know the Irish not-for-profit sector, its governance and its regulators
- You have relationships in the sector you'd be glad to open up on Altu's behalf
- You work in sexual and reproductive health and rights
- You work in education, teaching or curriculum development
- You come from public health, youth work or youth services
- You build content, online communities or digital learning spaces
- You've sat on a board or led an organisation before
None of these are required, and board experience isn't required either. If this would be your first board seat and you bring knowledge or connections we don't have yet, apply.
This organisation started with a question: who actually benefits when our children grow up uneducated about their own bodies and their own rights? If that question matters to you too, we'd like to hear from you. We're a small board and we'll be making real decisions together from day one. We want someone who finds that exciting rather than daunting, who's drawn to building something new and wants a real hand in shaping what it becomes.
Time commitment
Six to eight board meetings in the first year, held online, moving to quarterly once we're registered. Realistically, expect two to three hours a month including reading time.
A note from our founder
I started Altu because of a gap I kept seeing from two directions: what young people are taught, and what the adults around them were taught.
My own path to this work wasn't a straight line. I spent years in financial services and nonprofit lending, with health education before that. When I went back to study at 39, I chose global sexual and reproductive health on purpose, at a moment when reproductive rights were being rolled back at home in the US. It didn't feel like a change of direction. It felt overdue.
I moved to Ireland from the US at the end of 2025, and I'm building this here on purpose. What I don't have yet is a network in the Irish sector or the local knowledge that comes with years in it. That's a real gap and I'd rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise.
If you have that, and this work matters to you, I'd like to talk.
