The Organisation 

Carr’s Child and Family Services is a company limited by guarantee. Their values are important to their organisation, and Carr’s Child and Family Services strive to be the best service they can be. The organisation is constantly adapting and changing to meet the needs of families to ensure the best possible outcomes for children. Carr’s Child and Family Services works in partnership with the parents and children for the best possible outcome for families. The Board of Management is voluntary, and each member brings their area of expertise to the smooth running of the service. The CEO oversees the day to day running of the service and is supported by a highly qualified team. 

Founded my Miss Lizzie Carr, the first home was established in 1887 on Nelson Street. Today Carr’s Child and Family Services focuses on early intervention work with families.

The Role: 

 

Carr’s Child and Family Services is seeking a Chairperson to lead the Board of Trustees. This crucial role encompasses guiding the Board in overseeing the organisation’s strategic direction, governance, and overall performance. The Chairperson will be responsible for ensuring the Board operates effectively and that the executive team is held accountable for achieving the charity’s strategic objectives. 

The ideal candidate will be a strong facilitator, decisive, empathetic, and accountable leader, with the expertise to steer the organisation effectively. Carr’s Child and Family Services encourage applications from individuals with extensive experience in leadership and governance who are also passionate about child and family welfare. A background in child welfare or healthcare and familiarity with the not-for-profit sector would be advantageous.  

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  • Facilitate effective Board meetings. 

  • Provide leadership to the Board. 

  • Promote exemplary governance among Trustees. 

  • Emphasise transparency and accountability. 

  • Provide continuous supervision and support to the CEO. 

  • Collaborate to achieve organisational objectives. 

  • Uphold the organisation’s integrity. 

  • Serve as a figurehead and spokesperson when necessary. 

  • Engage with the public on behalf of the charity when necessary. 

  • Advocate for and communicate the charity’s mission and values. 

 

Skills and Experience Required: 

 

  • Leadership and Strategic Vision: Provides clear direction and effective leadership to drive success. 

  • Governance and Compliance Expertise: Ensures adherence to regulations and best governance practices.  

  • Communication Skills: Conveys information clearly and fosters effective dialogue 

  • Advocacy and Public Engagement: Promotes organisational goals and engages with stakeholders. 

  • Empathy and Sensitivity: Responds to others' needs with compassion and consideration 

  • Decision-Making and Follow-Up: Makes timely decisions and ensures thorough follow-up. 

  • Commitment to Mission and Values: Upholds the organisation’s mission and values with dedication. 

 

Charities Regulator’s General Duties of a Charity Trustee 

 

  • Comply with the Charity’s governing document. 

  • Ensuring charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit. 

  • Acting in the best interest of the charity 

  • Act with Reasonable Care and Skill 

  • Manage the assets of your charity. 

 

Board Meetings 

There are ten board meetings a year, with a schedule decided upon by board members. Meetings are held both online and in-person on site at the Carr’s Child and Family Services office on Northbrook Road with the intention that meetings will move to in-person fully in the future. Meetings last approximately one hour each and typically take place in the morning, however this is under review. 

There are two committees: the finance committee and the safeguarding committee. The Chairperson is expected to attend the finance committee. Each committee meets three to four times a year with each meeting running for approximately one hour in duration. 

 

Please note that this is a voluntary role. Renumeration is not applicable to board roles.
