The Role
Area of Expertise - Fingal Volunteer Centre seeks an additional board member with experience in the volunteer sector and/or as a volunteer to be the voice of the people we support.
Every board member has the following responsibilities:
- Commitment to the development of the Fingal Volunteer Centre and support for its vision, mission, values and objectives.
- Act in the interests of Fingal Volunteer Centre at all time in relation to assets, property, statutory obligations and management requirements.
- Act as a charity trustee and a company director.
- Prepare adequately for and actively participate in board meetings.
- Participate in any sub-committees as required.
- Where necessary deciding on strategic actions required to achieve Fingal Volunteer Centre’s objectives, ensuring that all activities are consistent with the organisation’s vision and core values.
- Ensuring Fingal Volunteer Centre complies with relevant legal requirements.
- Promoting prudent and effective management of organisational resources (financial and human).
- Monitoring risk management strategies for Fingal Volunteer Centre.
- Formally registering conflicts of interest or loyalty with the board.
- Not accepting gifts or gifts in kind in the capacity of board member.
- Championing Fingal Volunteer Centre.
Essential Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities:
- Creativity and ability to come with fresh ideas and solutions to challenges.
- An enquiring mind, with the confidence to challenge constructively.
- Understanding of the community and voluntary sector landscape in Fingal.
- Respectful of others, even those with different views and opinion
- Commitment to the vision and mission of Fingal Volunteer Centre.
Desirable Experience, Skills and Personal Qualities:
- Experience of strategic planning and service development.
- Board level experience in the non-profit sector.
- Knowledge and experience of the Charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice).
- Knowledge of the 2014 Companies Act.
- Knowledge of the 2009 Charities Act.
* Motivation and interest to learn can make up for gaps in the above.
Time Commitment and Location:
- Board members serve a term up-to 4 years. We are happy to consider shorter commitments based on the individual profile.
- Anticipated commitment is between 4 and 8 hours per month (monthly board meeting (1h) + subcommittee meeting (1-2h) + preparation time /reading documentation between meeting).
- Meetings take place mostly online for ease of attendance. However all directors must be able to attend locations in Fingal for physical meeting.
- Board members should be prepared for some preparatory work in advance of each meeting.
Training and Support:
- New directors will receive induction, training, and support, ensuring a smooth transition into the role.
- FVC has a budget set aside for board director training, and all board members are encouraged to undertake training as part of their role. Training needs will be identified on an ad hoc basis, and through a board review process.
