Board Member: Care-Experienced

Role Purpose 

We are seeking a Board Member with lived experience of the care system to bring invaluable insight, perspective, and advocacy to our governance and strategic direction. This role ensures that the voices of those with care experience are represented at the highest level of decision-making. 

Board Members play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the organisation, ensuring financial sustainability, and maintaining strong governance. Board members act collectively in the best interests of the organisation, contributing their expertise while supporting and constructively challenging the executive team. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Contribute to the overall governance and strategic oversight of the organisation 
  • Provide lived-experience insight to inform policies, programmes, and services 
  • Advocate for care-experienced individuals and ensure their needs remain central 
  • Support the organisation in adopting inclusive, trauma-informed approaches 
  • Participate actively in Board meetings and relevant subcommittees 

 Person Specification 

  • Lived experience of the care system (foster care, residential care, or aftercare services) 
  • Passion for improving outcomes for care-experienced individuals 
  • Ability to contribute constructively in a governance setting 
  • Experience in advocacy, youth voice, or community engagement 
  • Previous board or committee experience (not essential) 

 Commitment 

  • Attend Board meetings (typically 4–6 per year) 
  • Board Members are appointed for an initial term of three years 
  • Participate in occasional strategy sessions or subcommittees (Governance & Risk, Strategy & Purpose and Finance)
