Responsibilities:
A Board Member (Trustee) provides strategic direction for the organisation and ensures compliance with relevant governance guidelines. As we are a small organisation, Signal requires active participation and flexibility from its Board Members. Signal is a registered charity, and the role is voluntary and non-fee-paying.
This role involves taking on the Treasury function. The Treasurer will take a lead in presenting financial data to the Board members and ensure that they are individually and collectively aware of their financial obligations. As Signal operates a Community Employment (CE) Scheme, the Treasurer will also have responsibility for ensuring compliance with the Scheme. They will:
- maintain an oversight of Signal Art Centre’s financial affairs, ensuring its viability;
- ensure that proper financial records are maintained, comply with relevant legislation, meet the conditions of contractual agreements with external funding bodies and liaise with Auditors;
- actively oversee the production of monthly management accounts, ensure effective controls are in place, and provide mentoring advice and guidance to Signal book-keeping staff;
- appraise the financial viability of plans and proposals and highlight financial considerations as part of the Board’s decision-making process;
- manage the CE Scheme in accordance with CE procedures, to include liaison with the Department of Social Protection (DSP), authorisation of payments, attendance at CE Management Committee meetings and participation in an annual Financial Monitoring inspection by the DSP.
Skills and qualities
- A qualification in Accountancy and/or financial management;
- Effective strategic vision and independent judgement;
- Experience in grant opportunities, income generation and fundraising;
- An interest in the arts and/or community engagement is desirable.
Time commitment
- Attend bi-monthly evening Board meetings and monthly CE Management Committee meetings;
- 1 ½ days per month.
