Tallaght University Hospital Research & Innovation Committee Member

Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is a model 4, voluntary, academic teaching hospital partnered with Trinity College and situated in south west Dublin. With a staff of over 4,000 people from 63 countries, it provides both acute and tertiary care to an increasing population of circa 800,000 people and is a provider of local, regional and national specialties. It is also a National Urology Centre, the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country, Pelvic and Acetabulum National Centre and a designated Trauma Unit.

The Hospital is part of the newly established HSE Dublin & Midlands Region, which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties, and operates under the governance of an independent Board of Directors who give their time on a voluntary basis. TUH is also supported by the Adelaide Health Foundation, the Meath Foundation and Tallaght University Hospital Foundation.

TUH is a registered charity and recognises the role it plays in our community both as an employer and provider of healthcare and is committed to building a sustainable future for our region both now and into the future with a focus on patient outcomes.

TUH now wishes to appoint an external Committee member to the Research & Innovation Committee.  The Committees work aims to enhance:

  1. Overseeing research and innovation activities in TUH, including their impact
  2. Working with the management team to bring forward new initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of current activities
  3. Make proposals to ensure organisational readiness for innovation, by mobilising the creativity of staff
  4. Seeking to develop leaders in TUH by building innovation skills
  5. Encourage senior management support for new thinking, creating appropriate space and time for staff
  6. Encourage the involvement of users of TUH services in the creation of better services and new and improved products
  7.  

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of research and innovation in a large public or private organisation, and/or
  • Experience of leading change in an organisation in a manner which shows innovative approaches
  • Senior Executive, Board and/or Committee level experience;
  • General knowledge and experience of the healthcare structure in Ireland.

Applicants should be aware of the Charites Regulator’s General Duties of a Charity Trustee, which include the need to:

  • Comply with the charity’s governing document.
  • Ensure the charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
  • Act in the best interest of the charity.
  • Act with reasonable care and skill.
  • Manage the assets of the charity.

Time Commitments.

The Research & Innovation Committee meets five times a year (usually 1.5 hours per meeting), some of which are held in-person in Tallaght University Hospital. There will also be additional time required for the preparation of meetings, including the reading of materials associated with Committee meetings.

The successful candidate will be appointed for a period of three years (1 term) with the possibility of re-appointment.

There is no remuneration associated with the position.
