President of the Council

The Organisation:

The Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) was established in 1897, by the ‘Dublin Eye and Ear Hospital Act’ in 1897. This enabled the amalgamation of the National Eye Hospital, founded by Isaac Ryall in 1814 and St. Mark’s Ophthalmic Hospital for diseases of the Eye and Ear, founded by Sir William Wilde in 1844. The Hospital is a registered charity.

The Hospital is governed by the President and the Council and managed by the Hospital Management Group which consists of: - Chief Executive, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, Director of Finance and Organisation Services, Director of Nursing, Director of Operations and Human Resources, Medical Director and Director of Education and Research.

The Hospital’s annual activity is about 7,000 in-patients, 40,000 OPD (Out-Patients Department) attendees, and 40,000 Accident and Emergency attendees. At the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, we are very proud of our contribution to the medical needs of the city and country for over a century and we are proud to continue servicing the health of the community for many years to come.

Main objectives of the Hospital are:

  • To provide a quality service to those in need of medical, surgical, and nursing care for the eyes, ears, nose, and throat
  • To adopt a holistic and caring approach to the delivery of care
  • To collaborate with partners in caring for the patients
  • To promote and support education and research

The Role:

RVEEH is seeking to appoint a new President of the Council.

General duties of a Council Member/President:

  • Provide appropriate governance and oversight of the Hospital and its activities/operations
  • Ensure the Hospital adheres to its mission, vision, and strategic goals
  • Ensure the Hospital is fulfilling its charitable purpose in line with its governing documents, and in realising its strategic goals
  • Collectively responsible for the financial performance of the hospital
  • Ensuring the quality of the Hospital’s healthcare services, education & research
  • Act independently and with the Hospitals best interests in mind
  • Integration of services with other Healthcare providers
  • Ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place to safeguard the management of the Hospital’s assets
  • Prepare for and attend at Council and sub-committee meetings

Duties specific to the President:

  • Lead the Council in developing and realising a vision for the Hospital
  • Lead the Council & Management team in striving to position the Hospital as a centre of excellence in Ireland
  • Promote best practice in governance and compliance within the Hospital
  • Challenge the Hospital to develop and improve its procedures and processes in line with best practice in corporate governance and compliance
  • Work with the fundraising arm on the site redevelopment project
  • Consult with the HSE on numerous occasions in terms of SLA, funding, and contracts.

Desirable skills

  • Person with strong leadership qualities – as President, you must be able to bring a team together to guide them on a strategic journey
  • Business or Health background is beneficial
  • Good communications skills
  • Experience of leading a large organisation
  • Personable but very determined
  • Previous board experience
  • Strong Negotiating skills
  • Knowledge of the HSE and Department of Health
  • Strong Knowledge of corporate governance
  • Experience with organisational transformation would be an advantage
  • Awareness of challenges facing charities and the SME sector generally also an advantage

Board Meetings:

The board meetings are monthly (except for Jan, Apr & Aug) and are currently online, but the expectation is to have a hybrid model when it is safe to do so. The in-person meeting location is RVEEH Adelaide Rd, Training and Education Centre. The appointed President will also be expected to join committees of the Council. The AGM is held in March every year.
