Peter McVerry Trust is a national housing and homeless charity committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage.

The charity provides low-threshold entry services, primarily to younger people and vulnerable adults with complex needs and offers pathways out of homelessness based on the principles of the Housing First model.

Peter McVerry Trust’s national headquarters are located in Dublin. The charity currently has a mid- west regional office in Limerick City, a north-east regional office in Drogheda, Co Louth, and a mid-east regional office in Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare.

In 2025, the charity worked with over 12,000 people and was active in 28 local authorities across Ireland.

The Role:

Peter McVerry Trust is seeking two experienced professionals to serve on our Governance, Compliance & Nominations Committee - a formal committee of the Board of Peter McVerry Trust.

Members of the Committee will provide independent oversight and assurance, along with expert advice and constructive challenge. The Committee plays a key role in supporting the Board to maintain high standards of corporate governance, ensuring robust policies and practices across the organisation, and promoting best practice in Board effectiveness, policy development and regulatory compliance. This includes ensuring that Board positions are filled by individuals with the appropriate skills, experience & governance experience.

Candidates will bring substantial experience in corporate governance, together with a strong understanding of charity regulation and the operating framework for charities and/or Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs). Experience within the housing association and/or charity sector is highly desirable, along with a genuine commitment to the organisation’s mission and values.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Guidance: Advise the Board on best practices in non-profit governance, ensuring that the culture remains accountable and mission-driven.
  • Contribute to sound governance, strong decision-making and effective oversight
  • Advise and guide the Board on its compliance, regulatory and legal responsibilities.
  • Support Board recruitment, Trustee induction, training and periodic reviews of Board effectiveness.
  • Ensure that all organisational policies and procedures align with best practice and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain familiarity with the organisation’s governing document and the legal obligations of charities under the Charities Act 2009.

 

Skills and Experience Required:

  • A highly experienced practitioner in the area of Governance and Compliance.
  • An understanding of the Charities Governance Code, Companies Act, AHBRA Regulation, GDPR and expectations set by the Charities Regulator.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest.
  • Previous committee experience would be an advantage.
  • Strong leadership and strategic vision, with the ability to provide constructive support and challenge at governance level.

Commitment:

  • Commitment to Peter McVerry Trust’s vision, mission and values.
  • Members of the Governance, Compliance & Nominations Committee will be appointed for a period of three years with the possibility of reappointment for a second term at the direction of the Board.
  • The Committee convenes online, approximately five times per year, with occasional additional meetings as required.
  • Meetings take place at 11:00 and last for 1.5 hours.
  • Preparation and review of papers in advance of meetings.
  • Participation in email discussions between meetings can take place.

 

  • Occasional ad-hoc input as required.
  • This is a voluntary role; reasonable expenses may be reimbursed where applicable
