Chairperson of the Board

The responsibilities of the Chair are as follows:

  • To lead the Board, encourage open and critical discussions and to facilitate the effective contribution of all directors
  • To contribute to the efficient flow of information within, and communication between, the Board and the CEO
  • To assist the Board, through his/her leadership, in overseeing the governance and performance of the ISPCA
  • To ensure the Board functions well and to bring impartiality and objectivity to meetings and decision making
  • To plan and chair meetings
  • To ensure that decisions made at meetings are implemented
  • To regularly liaise with the CEO and to keep up to date on the affairs of the ISPCA
  • To ensure there are appropriate strategies in place to implement the policies of the ISPCA
  • To be aware of current issues that might affect the ISPCA
  • To advocate for and represent the ISPCA at external meetings and events if required
  • To ensure appropriate board succession planning is in place

Qualities and skills required:

  • Preferably prior experience in chairing a substantial NFP or corporate entity
  • Commitment to the purpose and values of the ISPCA
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • Tact and diplomacy
  • Strong understanding of the roles/responsibilities of a governing body

Board Meetings:

The Board meets 8 times per year on Saturdays in Santry, Dublin, for 2-3 hours.
