Board Opportunities - Financial Management, Governance and Risk, and Communications, Marketing and Commercial

Marathon Events Management DAC is the not-for-profit Organisation behind the Irish Life Dublin Marathon — the fifth largest marathon in Europe — along with the Irish Life Dublin Race Series and the new Dublin City Half Marathon.

Marathon Events Management DAC are seeking to recruit a number of Board member positions across a range of experiences, backgrounds, and disciplines namely Financial Management, Governance and Risk, and Communications, Marketing and Commercial. The Board are particularly interested in individuals with recent and relevant experience as follows:

Financial Management

  • Financial Management/leadership and financial control experience in a medium to large Organisation in the Not for Profit/Charity sector or the corporate sector
  • Ability to read and analyse financial reports, management accounts, financial proposals, investment proposals, and contribute to financial decision-making at a senior level
  • Engaging at senior level in a Not for Profit / Charity or Corporate at executive level, at Board level or senior committee level
  • Supporting the development and challenge of operating budgets and financial sustainability plans
  • Ensuring the Organisation operates to sound financial management standards
  • Ensuring that the Organisation is adhering to its financial policies and procedures by supporting the development of financial control frameworks 
  • Providing assurance that financial standards in the Organisation are robust
  • An accountancy qualification is a minimum requirement

Governance and Risk

  • Ensuring compliance with existing and new/emerging legislation, governance codes and best practices
  • Ensuring responsible management of the assets of the Organisation
  • Ensuring appropriate risks are identified and risk management control frameworks are in place
  • Ensuring policies and procedures are in place and reviewed as agreed.
  • Providing assurance to the Board that Governance and Risk standards are robust
  • Advising on corporate governance developments pertinent to the Organisation activities
  • Experience in Governance and Risk at a senior level in a Company/Corporate or in a Not for Profit/Charity is a minimum requirement. 

Communications, Marketing and Commercial

  • Providing input and challenge to the Organisation marketing plans and communication activities 
  • Contributing to the review of Commercial and other funding sources, and their expansion, to ensure a sustainable financial future for the Organisation
  • Providing overview/oversight to the process for securing Commercial partnerships and Sponsorship
  • Supporting the development and maximisation of the Brand value of the Organisation
  • Experience in overview/oversight of funding, evaluating the value of sponsorship, evaluating commercial proposals, or in community outreach programmes would be an advantage
  • Experience in an Organisation’s marketing or commercial and/or communication activities is a minimum requirement

General Board member duties

Members of the Board are appointed to oversee the running of the affairs of the Organisation.

  • Strategic Leadership: Collaborate with a diverse team of professionals to shape the organisation's strategic direction. Ensure that key/material decisions are made according to proper standards of information and evaluation.
  • Governance: Have a desire to implement the highest standards of governance. Provide guidance and oversight, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and policies, while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and transparency. Formulate Policy and ensure adherence.
  • Advocacy: Be a passionate advocate for the Organisation's mission, raising awareness and support within the community, among potential partners and existing key stakeholders.
  • Behaviours and Values: adhere to a set of Organisation behaviours and values e.g. acting in the best interest of the Organisation and acting with reasonable care and skill.
  • Commitment: to be able and committed to contribute as follows
    • The Board meets approximately every 7 weeks, and meets in person in Dublin, in the evening
    • Each Board member will be expected to join a minimum of one Board Committee. Committee meetings are typically online and take place every quarter.
    • The Organisation Board member roles are non-paid roles, but out-of-pocket expenses will be paid in line with the Organisation’s policy.
